Publisher Description: In 1749, John Cleland was prosecuted by British censors for writing Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, the first sexually explicit novel in English (and still one of the best-known). Though initially imprisoned on a charge of obscenity, he was later paid 100 a year by the government on the condition that he never again publish an obscene work. Two years later, he published Memoirs of a Coxcomb, a less explicit companion to his first novel, written from a male perspective. Part romance and part social satire, Memoirs of a Coxcomb will appeal to readers interested in eighteenth-century literature, the early novel, or the history of sexuality. Appendices include Tobias Smollett's review of the novel, selections from Cleland's criticism, and eighteenth-century writings on masculinity and prostitution. |
