Annotation: The principal goal of this collection of stimulating essays is clarity about Wittgenstein's work in general and about his conception of clarity in particular. Though long a devoted student of Wittgenstein, Newton Garver refuses the limitations that make Wittgenstein's work distinctive. While Wittgenstein sought clarity "as an end in itself" and found both advocacy and exegesis problematic, Garver continues to seek pragmatic clarity for critical analysis in Part One and for exegesis in Part Two. Part One discusses traditional clarification as exemplified in critical commentary on prominent discussions of persuasion and in the use/mention distinction. Part Two delves into contestable clarity, treating the topics of violence, justice, and politics; Derrida on grammar, logic, and rhetoric; McGuinness on Wittgenstein's "Tractatus, necessity; and the silence of Wittgenstein and Kraus. In Part Three, Garver addresses some of the most difficult features of Wittgenstein's later thought: how to accommodate his anti-essentialism with his appeal to essences as given in grammar; the extent to which his conception of language is Kantian and so constitutes a transcendental philosophy; and the relation of grammar to the conception of logic found in the Tractatus. Part Three also presents a unique slant on Wittgenstein's approach in the affinities that Garver notes between Wittgenstein's thought and the ideas of George Fox, the founder of Quakerism, whom Wittgenstein is known to have admired. Also of interest is the author's argument that Wittgenstein's language-games have more in common with Aristotle's categories than is generally acknowledged. This in-depth, clearly presented study by aninternationally recognized scholar of Wittgenstein will be of great interest to philosophers and students of 20th-century thought.
