Annotation: The Wonderful Adventures of Nils -- which is the work of Sweden's greatest fiction writer -- was first published in Stockholm, in December, 1906. Lagerl?f wrote it after a commission from the National Teachers' Association to write a reader for the public schools. She devoted three years to Nature study and to familiarizing herself with animal and bird life; she sought out unpublished folklore and legends of the different provinces, and wove them all into her story. With no small success; the book immediately became the most popular book of the year in Scandinavia.

Publisher Description:

Diana of the Crossways retells a tale that may well have been true: Although Meredith was forced to attach a disclaimer to the novel, it was no secret when he wrote the book that he was writing about the life of Caroline Norton, granddaughter of playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Unhappily married, the woman ("Diana"), takes a lover -- and becomes suspect when someone reveals an important political secret that she, as lover, was party to. A compelling study of a woman and her times.

Contributor Bio(s): Lagerlof, Selma: - "Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlof (1858 - 1940) was a Swedish author and teacher. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature and is best remembered for her children's book The Wonderful Adventures of Nils. Lagerlof was asked by the National Teacher's Association in 1902 to write a geography book for children. She interestingly combined informative facts of Sweden's geography with a boy named Nils Holgersson. When the boy got in trouble, he traveled to many different provinces, allowing children to learn about Sweden while staying interested."
