His father, hard as he tried, could not take care of him alone. Amedee is given to tutors and schoolmasters. All the while, the young Maria (who lives next door) has been a constant in his life. As they grow older, Amedee realizes that he's falling in love with her. But alas, he is not without competitors. Maria has become a beautiful young lady and Amedee must contend with gentlemen of wealth and stature. In order to win her love, he must find a profession that will supply her with all she ever wanted. . . .

Franois Coppe was a French poet and dramatist. He won critical acclaim from his one act play "Le Passant" -- juvenile Sarah Bernhardt starred in it, and the role made her famous overnight.

Contributor Bio(s): Coppee, Francois: - "Francois Edouard Joachim Coppee (1842 - 1908) was a French poet and novelist. Coppee was famed as le poete des humbles (the poet of the humble). His verse and prose focus on plain expressions of emotion, patriotism, the joy of young love and the pitifulness of the poor. He continued to write plays, mostly serious dramas in verse, two in collaboration with Armand d'Artois. The performance of a short episode of the Commune, Le Pater, was prohibited by the government in 1889."
