38 Colon Cancer Meal Recipes: Vitamin Packed Foods That the Body Needs To Fight Back Without Using Drugs or Pills

By Joe Correa CSN

The risk of colon cancer is attributed to several factors such as age older than 50, family history, inherited genetic syndromes, a sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, obesity, alcohol, smoking and a diet low in fiber and high in fat. To prevent the risk of colon cancer, consumption of red, processed meats, foods high in calories or sweets, refined grains like white bread and fried foods should be avoided. Certain cooking methods of meats may also increase the risk of cancer. Meats that are cooked in very high temperatures can form carcinogens. Diet that is rich in fiber mostly found in fruits, vegetables, cereals, including flour and bread is protective against bowel cancer. The calcium and vitamin D in dairy products lower the risk of bowel cancer and polyps. Foods that are high in antioxidants bolster the body's immune system against potentially dangerous substances called free radicals. Some examples of antioxidants naturally present in fruits and vegetables are carotene, beta-carotene and lutein. Studies show that folic acid is also preventive of colon cancer. Folic acid is responsible for forming new cells and tissues as well as keeping red blood cells healthy. A common example of vegetables rich in folic acid are the dark leafy greens, especially spinach. Citrus fruits also contain a high amount of folic acid.
