Publisher Description: Two themes for transport professionals. Replacing congestion with green waves, and solving all transport problems with aerial podcars. Traffic must be metered to remove congestion. A green wave will then travel at the speed limit. Minor traffic must be staged across arterials. Processing right turns on the approaches to intersections, within the existing footprint, using a two-phase design, will increase intersection capacity by 70%, cut the crash rate by half, and greatly reduce delays. Tolled queue jumping at restrictions for 90% of traffic will slash trip time, cut emissions by half, and is the best form of road pricing, supported by the normal delay for the 10% free entry queue. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fully automatic vehicles on exclusive track have no crashes. Up-market vehicles must be four times faster, operate at half the cost, and have redundant capacity for reliability to attract 80% of traffic out of cars. Vehicles must be private, have personal routes, and video monitoring to minimise assaults. Vehicles must be electric, quiet, on a guide-way that is 10m high, on poles, and use 100% grades to small stops, for amenity. Profit, local jobs and rural service are essential. 300kg vehicles keep the cost of operation and track down, enabling huge profits, job creation, and low cost network in sparely trafficked rural areas. The only option that meets all objectives is aerial podcars. |
