Publisher Description: The South Carolina 2nd Infantry Battalion Sharpshooters was originally Company B of the SC 9th Infantry Regiment. The men were from Beaufort and Colleton Counties. The captain was Benjamin Burgh Smith. Rivers Account of the Raising of the Troops for State and Confederate Service in South Carolina states that 300 men were originally enrolled. The 2nd Infantry Battalion elected B. Burgh Smith to serve as its major. Three companies were organized on June 22, 1862. They were assigned to the 3rd Military District of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida from June - September 1862 when they were apparently disbanded. Although two battles (Secessionville and Pocotaligo) occurred during this time, and the Second Sharpshooters are listed under Col. W. S. Walker's command, there is no record that this battalion participated. |
