Annotation: This book is about politics of childhood in India between the 1860s and 1930s. It deals with some urgent issues, including British and Indian attitudes toward children in Britain and India, and how these are reflected in contemporary literature. It also covers the British "invention" of juvenile deliquency in colonial India, which allowed the British to impose their own methods of nurture and discipline on children. Interestingly, Satandr Sen explores the British "experimentation" with raising colonial children and the taboo of female education and delinquency. The author also investigates attitudes towards the children of the Indian aristocracy, the middle-class child, and representations of children in Bengali literature.
