Publisher Description: Originally compiled on the orders of King Alfred the Great, approximately A.D. 890, and subsequently maintained and added to by generations of anonymous scribes until the middle of the 12th Century. The original language is Anglo-Saxon (Old English), but later entries are essentially Middle English in tone. This book is not a literal translation of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles. They are, in fact, a number of documents that have been combined to form a record of historical events up to the twelfth century, as described by the preparer, Douglas B. Killings. This edition is in the public domain as an ebook, and has been typeset for those who prefer a physical volume. Collected works believed to be written by, or or under the supervision of: King Alfred, Bishop Asser, The Venerable Bede, Ethelwerd, Gildas, Nennius, Archbishop Plegmund and several other members of the clergy, and many other unknown authors and translators. It spans English history from the period following the Roman era and the start of the Saxon rule, and into the Norman conquest and subsequent rule up to 1140. |
