Publisher Description:

Beginning with the ancient goddesses and the importance of legends, myths, and symbols, this book celebrates women in medicine from Ancient Egypt, Classical Greece, and Rome to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the present.

Trotula, Hildegard of Bingen, Wendy Savage, and Elizabeth, Countess of Kent are among the many unique healers finally recognized for their work. Documenting each woman's practices, achievements, and struggles, here at last is the definitive history of women's invaluable contribution to healing.

Informed by the author's understanding of the politics of medicine and fused with her appreciation of the powers of myth versus those of technology, this new reissue of the 1993 classic is an invaluable resource. Originally published by The Women's Press in 1993 (9780704343245).
