Publisher Description: During the 19th century, Boston and its vicinity became a major center for thebuilding of pipe organs. The firm of E. & G.G. Hook was founded in 1827 by EliasHook (1805-1881) and George G. Hook (1807-1880), sons of a Salem cabinetmaker, and later known as Hook & Hastings after Francis H. Hastings (1836-1916) became a partner in 1871. It had the distinction of eventually becoming notonly the longest lasting but also the most prolific among a worthy group of Bostonorgan builders during every period of its existence. |
