| Publisher Description: I might have the world record for balloon flights over 10,000 feet. If I don't, it wasn't from not trying. My one friend said this flight we tried to commit suicide. Trying for a one hundred mile plus balloon ride. Something less than five percent of all balloonists have done. Two old friends, each having fifty plus rides over the years, and I set up in front of a storm using stock equipment of four, 10 gallon tanks. Started to climb. The higher you get, the faster you go. At 5000 feet we entered the clouds. At 15,000 feet, still in the clouds, the decision to give up was finally unanimous. I've seen clouds 2 or 3 thousand feet thick, never two miles thick. We were fifty miles farther North than expected. Came down over the Allegheny National Forest, 500,000 acres of 100 foot trees. Low on fuel, getting dark and it started to rain... |
