Publisher Description:
English summary: Together with the Houses of Staufen and Guelph, the Zahringen dynasty was one of the three important princely houses in Swabia during the High Middle Ages. As dukes of Zahringen and rectors of Burgundy, they shaped the history and culture of the region from the central Black Forest to Lake Geneva from about 1100 to the extinction of their line in 1218. Here the dynasty asserted their dukedom, based on their nobility and ministeriality, by building castles and founding numerous cities. Spatial proximity and competition in Swabia and Burgundy repeatedly led to conflicts between the Houses of Zahringen and Staufen, which culminated in Duke Bertold V of Zahringen's candidacy for the imperial throne in 1198.
