Publisher Description: The book contains an extensive documentation on the Arabic dialect of Meknes by the well-known Berberologist Arsene Roux (1893-1971), an expert in Middle Atlas Berber, Tashelhit Berber and the Arabic dialects of Morocco. While living in Meknes from 1919 to 1927, he acquired an intimate knowledge of the dialect of this town that he analysed in his so far unpublished thesis Le parler arabe des musulmanes de Meknes (dated 1925), which places particular emphasis on the speech of women. The work is divided into three sections: 1. 28 texts in Meknes Arabic and their translations in French, 2. Phonetique and 3. Morphologie. Especially the rst section is of interest for Arabic dialectologists and provides an insight into the phonetic and morphological characteristics of the Meknes Arabic of women. Most of the sample texts can be labelled ethnographic, some texts are folktales, songs, riddles, and were selected by Roux to illustrate the speci c sound changes in the speech of women.
