| Publisher Description: English summary: The outbreak of the First World War a hundred years ago also requires the field of literary studies to undertake a retrospective reexamination of the nature of the event. While the literary process of continuity and creation of meaning can be called into question when set against the incommensurable dimensions of the war, autobiographical texts do have a role to play. Within the tension that exists between aesthetics, autobiographical fiction and cultural memory, a culture war of autobiography has developed, that actually touches the entire genre as well as questioning the representation of war. This culture of a war recorded in autobiography is systematically examined in this anthology on the basis of three main aspects - "Forms of autobiographical perception of war", "Autobiographical war narratives," "Fiction and production of autobiographical memory" - which, based on exemplary case studies of individual texts and authors, form a fundamental discussion of the practice and function of autobiography. German description: Der Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs vor hundert Jahren nimmt auch die Literaturwissenschaft in die Pflicht, aus der Ruckschau den Horizont des Ereignisses neu zu vermessen.
