It contains about 200 000 words and 30 000 proverbs, riddles and sayings that are used to explain the meaning of the words cited. At the heart of the dictionary is a living language of the people with its regional modifications, Dictionary contains translations of written and spoken language of the XIX century, the terminology and phraseology of different professions and crafts. The author not only provides information about the language, but also about the people's way of life, beliefs, superstitions, and other ethnographic information. In the first editions of the dictionary Dahl was in 1861. Constantine medal, and in 1868 he was elected an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences awarded the Lomonosov Prize. |
