Publisher Description:
The First International or International Workers' Association (IWA), was the first transnational organization to unite workers of different countries. Founded in London in 1864, it initially grouped the English unionists, anarchists, socialists, and French and Italian republicans. Its purposes were political organization of the proletariat in Europe and elsewhere, as well as being a forum for discussing common problems and proposing courses of action to solve them. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels worked with the organization.
