Publisher Description:
Edited by two leading orthopaedic surgeons specialized in the treatment of haemophilia, Orthopaedic Surgery in Patients with Haemophilia presents all the necessary information for the treatment of musculoskeletal complications of haemophilia. Haemophilia is an ancient disease, but the ability to perform a safe orthopaedic surgery on patients affected by haemophilia has only recently started to be managed correctly. Prior to the discovery of cryoprecipitate in 1965, death was an almost-guaranteed complication of surgery in a haemophilic patient. Skilled orthopaedic and physiotherapy intervention by health care providers knowledgeable in the management of hemophilia is central to achieve a positive outcome. Generations of haemophilic patients had poor treatment in their childhood and now consequently need orthopaedic procedures such as joint replacement. Unfortunately it has been suggested that worldwide 70% of those with haemophilia do not have access to adequate medical care: many of these individuals are undiagnosed and untreated. The book aims to be a wide-ranging, practical guide, gathering the experience of international specialists and will be a useful reference primarily for orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists, physiatrists and physiotherapists, but it will be relevant also to the haematologist responsible for the care of the haemophilic patient.
