Publisher Description: Mr. Valenti, whose original name was Chester Powers, was born in Danbury, Conn. He first began performing in the folk clubs of New York City. After moving to San Francisco, he was a founding member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, which briefly became one of San Francisco's leading psychedelic bands of the late 1960's, along with the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane. Soon after the band began, Mr. Valenti was arrested on drug charges and eventually imprisoned; after his release, he pursued a solo career. He rejoined the band in 1970, and was prominent on its albums "What About Me" and "Just for Love." His song "Get Together" was recorded by the Youngbloods and was a major hit in 1969. Another of his songs, "Hey Joe," was a late-1960's staple, recorded by the Byrds and Jimi Hendrix among others. |
