SENSE AND SENSIBILITY

It is not time or opportunity that is to determine intimacy; it is disposition alone. Seven years would be insufficient to make some people acquainted with each other, and seven days are more than enough for others.

― Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility

Sense and Sensibility is a novel written by Jane Austen and is about the hectic love and life stories of the Dashwood family, mainly Elinor and Marianne.

The Dashwood family lived in a large country estate until their father s demise. The siblings Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret and their mother are the second families of Henry Dashwood. When Henry was on his deathbed, he made his son from his first marriage, John, promise to take care of the girls and their distraught mother. But when the time came, John s greedy wife- Fanny, persuades him to break the promise. Edward Ferrars, Fanny s brother, visited the estate and is attracted to Elinor, but they were too cautious that their relationship didn t go anywhere. Eventually, the girls got too shafted that they find a new home.

With their barely adequate income, they could find a cottage near the home of Sir John Middleton, Mrs. Dashwood s cousin. They were welcomed by him, his wife- Lady Middleton, his mother-in-law- Mrs. Jennings and his friend- Colonel Brandon.

Coronel Brandon showed interest in Marianne, and Mrs. Jennings teased them about it, but Marianne is displeased. She thinks the 35-year-old bachelor is incapable of falling nor inspiring love in anyone.

Marianne meets the dashing young man, Willoughby, when she sprains her ankle in a walk. After he rescues her, Marianne couldn t help but appreciate the man that he is. They were so close that Elinor and Mrs. Dashwood suspected that the two are secretly engaged. But then, Willoughby suddenly left for London and didn t give any indication of when he ll come back.

Both sisters have stumbled upon a prospective partner, but both have seemed to come to an ambiguous situation.

How will it be a novel about love if there is no love fulfilled?
