Publisher Description:
Beginning with the death of Kobe Bryant in January, through the COVID-19 crisis that began in February, the murder of Breonna Taylor in March, George Floyd in May, and the murder of Ahmaud Arbery that came to light later that same month, 2020 has proven to be one for the record books. As a result, the country, and indeed the world, heard the voices of adults from all walks of life. What they didn't hear much of were the voices of the youth. When schools across the nation began shutting down, parents and teachers alike wondered what education for their students would look like, so it became necessary to find creative solutions to keep students on track. In the summer of 2020, Dr. Chantrise Sims Holliman held five weeklong writers workshops for students in Grades 5-11 to help them strengthen their writing skills while out of school. The essays that came out of these sessions were both powerful and inspiring, so there was no question that a book was necessary. What you will read in these pages are a series of essays and personal narratives written by students bold enough to endure their fun and educational writers workshop during Summer 2020, showcasing the real power, wisdom, and ability that comes with youthfulness when allowed to strive. Please read, enjoy, and learn from the young future leaders and creatives of the world as they speak on race, bullying, strife, politics, and much more.
