Publisher Description:
It is the beginning of the Eighteenth Century in the American British Colonies of the New World. There along the Mid-Atlantic Coast, well before the discontent of revolution begins to stir, Blackbeard the Pirate's lesser-known, not-quite-as-successful cousin, Short Stubbly Brownbeard, leads a normal, boring life of respectability and social engagements. All of that changes one night while working late at the office. Brownbeard is attacked by a mob of angry numbers thirsty for the blood of a young accountant. Fearing the drudgery of his profession threatens his sanity, Brownbeard's decision making goes from bad to worse as he abandons all responsibility, leaving his job to become a pirate. But as soon as he makes this rash decision, Brownbeard finds that being a pirate attracts not just admirers, nor merely the attention of other ne'er-do-wells, but also of creepy personages of a supernatural kind. While trying to avoid unwanted encounters with dark and mysterious enemies, Brownbeard struggles to put together a crew. Eventually, with the aid of Hazel, a beautiful young woman possessing decidedly witchy powers and a mastery of quantum gravity, and her highly dysfunctional, but semi-competent entourage that will serve as his crew, Brownbeard finds himself not across the Caribbean, but far across the Milky Way galaxy on the most ambitious pirate heist ever. There, in the center of galactic civilization, in the ancient and storied Empire of Sa'Laam, with its miles high and miles deep towers, Brownbeard and crew hatch a plan to swindle The Emperor of Sa'Laam of his wealth. But if the plan is to succeed, Brownbeard will have to participate in Sa'Laam's brutal game of Empire which is played every night in front of millions of blood-thirsty fans. But not even the terribleness of this sordid game can prepare Brownbeard and crew for the dark secret upon which the Empire is built. Brownbeard, even with Hazel's and his crew's assistance, is not ready to confront and defeat the rotting, chthonic horror upon which is founded the grandest civilization in the Universe. Loss of life, and worse, is surely at hand for Brownbeard, Hazel and crew. That is, unless a familiar, yet unexpected source of help might be persuaded to change plans and join forces in a pitched battle of good counter evil, of love against hate, of sanity versus cosmic horror. The Adventures of Short Stubbly Brownbeard was a Savannah Children's Book Festival Coastal Writer's Circle Invitee and Southern Mammas' Selection. It was the first ever juvenile fiction selection by Atlanta NPR affiliate WABE-FM's book show 'Between the Lines' for its recommended reading list. Andrea Thigpen, in the Georgia Library Quarterly called it an "Exciting book that combines science fiction and pirate adventure - wildly fantastical." Across the Pond, Vanessa Williamson of the Anerley Library, London Borough of Bromley, said "My reading group thought it was ace " Pirate website Bilgemunky.com called Brownbeard "Brilliantly odd and piratey - delightfully deranged." And Points North Magazine said it's "A hilariously adventurous journey - sure to captivate immature audiences of all ages "
