Publisher Description:
Wolf Creek is the true story of survival in the wilderness while surrounded by a group of emotionally disturbed teenage boys who were determined to kill me or run me off rather than accept me as their leader. In 1971 I took a job as a wilderness camp counselor for a group of delinquent teenage boys from the South side of Chicago. Among them were gang members, killers, animal mutilators, sociopaths and psychopaths. Because of their violent natures which were both unpredictable and uncontrollable they had been expelled from the Chicago juvenile system, the Illinois criminal detention system and the boy's ranch in Austin, Texas. They then found themselves in the remote back woods of East Texas. It was there that I met them and it was our job to tame them, socialize them and ultimately bring them together as a family built on trust and love, something which they had never known. After many adventures including gang fights, barefoot mountain climbing and deadly flash floods I was finally accepted as their leader. Each successful trip left the boys with an increased self confidence and self knowledge which changed them forever. Their increased self confidence allowed them to not only live in harmony with nature but to confront and begin to control the demons of hatred and violence which had haunted them their entire lives and forced them to live on the ragged edges of a society which had dehumanized and discarded them. This is a story of love conquering hatred, violence, chaos, and self loathing. It is a story which will cause your heart to cry out with the pain of a hard won victory over the demons of the soul.
