Publisher Description: Volume 2 of Arpeggios! covers arpeggio inversions and superimposition for the jazz chord progression found in tunes like "Autumn Leaves." The arpeggio exercises follow the progression through different inversions played over three adjacent strings in four positions of the neck. This approach allows the reader to become familiar with shapes found inside the common one and two octave patterns that originate from the root, which is the focus of most arpeggio studies. Being able to visualize the patterns this way is beneficial to recognizing common tone and voice leading opportunities when soloing and comping. All examples are presented with separate notation and tablature pages. The latter part of the book takes the shapes learned in Section One and superimposes them over the chord progression in ways that extend the harmony to create more interesting and modern sounds. Although the focus here is on popular jazz progressions, these ideas can be applied to any genre of music. Simple backing tracks are available for download from the author's website. |
