Publisher Description: Bell Blu is a poor working girl in a small rural town in Central Virginia with an 8th grade education who longs to be on her own. She is tired of living with her abusive, alcoholic stepfather, Daddy Boss, and her mother, Nicey, who insists that the only way Bell is ever going to leave home is married to a man who will take care of her. Bell despises the whole idea of a woman needing a man to provide for her: just look at her best friend, Patience, who married young and is now pregnant with baby #4. Childhood friend, Bird, is in love with Bell, and would gladly give her the world. He is everything Nicey wants for Bell. What Bell wants is to be free to be herself and she will do anything to get her freedom including creating a plan of escape through a fake marriage with the local town hoodlum, Doc. But things don't go as planned, and Bell finds herself in an even more dangerous predicament that could cost her, her life and her freedom. |
