Annotation: Cell immobilisation biotechnology is a multidisciplinary area, shown to have an important impact on many scientific subdisciplines, including biomedicine, pharmacology, cosmetics, food and agricultural sciences, beverage production, industrial and municipal waste treatment, analytical applications, and biologics production. The two volumes on Cell Immobilisation Biotechnology are the result of the editors' intention to collate the extensive and widespread information on fundamental aspects and applications of immobilisation/encapsulation biotechnology into a comprehensive reference work and to provide an overview of the most recent results and developments in this domain.
Cell Immobilisation Biotechnology Biotechnology is divided into two volumes. The first volume is dedicated to fundamental aspects of cell immobilisation while the second volume deals with the diverse applications of this technology.
The first volume, Fundamentals of Cell Immobilisation Biotechnology, comprises 26 chapters arranged into four parts:

-"Materials for cell immobilisation/encapsulation,"

-"Methods and technologies for cell immobilisation/encapsulation,"

-"Carrier characterisation and bioreactor design," and

-"Physiology of immobilised cells: techniques and mathematical modelling."

Audience: This volume is intended to cover the needs of, and to be the essential resource for, both the academic and industrial communities involved in the study of cell immobilisation biotechnology. A combination of biological and engineering/technology aspects is included to reach an even wider audience, such as specialists in biochemistry, microbiology, biology, medicine, chemical, biochemical and tissueengineering, who seek a broad view on cell immobilisation/encapsulation fundamentals and applications.

Reviews:

"It is now over 30 years since serious exploration and development of methods for immobilising cells began. This book fills that need more than adequately, providing information both for experts and for newcomers to the field, and should be available in the library of any institution involved in biotechnology." Chris Bucke in Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, 81: 730 (2006)

"In summary, this book provides a rich expertise and knowledge on all aspects of cell immobilisation/encapsulation fundamentals. It presents a comprehensive up-to-date source of information for each scientist approaching this discipline." A. Durieux and A. van Landschoot in Cerevisia, vol 31, N1-2006
