Publisher Description:
Perhaps "the little films in our heads" reflect the world around us more accurately than we thought. For most of Michael's life, he's been lost in the strange imaginings burrowed in his mind, always drifting into a world beyond the San Francisco hill of his grandfather's estate. At first, Michael doesn't think much of it, but when a slender figure appears and tortures him in a real-life night terror, he finds that reality is much less innocent than what he believed. And when his grandfather, Thomas, explains they come from an intelligent line of ancient beings called the Soloists who nurtured civilization through their daydreams, he almost hurls. His vivid perceptions may be more than simply a young boy's imagination, and Michael is forced to accept his new role as part of the few of a dying race. The world slowly becomes engulfed in mist, turning all of humanity into nightmarish creatures called the Sleep. The plan? Find the rest, the last of the Soloists. Although found, the remaining Soloists stand weak when life-threatening nightmares terrorize their subconscious every sleeping and waking moment, sending them all towards a complex sense of reality. In the midst of their suffering, Michael discovers the last strand of hope that could cure them all- an ominous notebook left from one of their ancestors. Only then will Michael have the strength to lead the world toward a final reawakening and perhaps unfold the remnants of his troubled past. Stories interwoven within include the tragic relationship between Life and Death, a mysterious diamond-haired girl, and a cannibalistic winter community. Slightly self-aware and curiously bizarre, SPECTRUM OF A DAYDREAM offers a surrealist take on the classic Hero's Journey. It is also a loose recreation of the popular Australian mythology "The Dreaming."
