Young schoolboy Johnny Dexter, is being fostered by a middle-aged couple named Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, and Mr. Lewis's sister, Elizabeth.

He is worried by strange, frightening dreams he finds hard to describe, then, from a book in his local library, Johnny learns of quite incredible war-time exploits and inventions once held top secret - which are now released from the security files - and he reads an account of a happening, which occurred in 1943 at the height of World War Two, when the United States was reported to be experimenting with the idea of a cloaking device for their navy ships...

Two young scientists, pictured in the book, are known to have since been working on their own research into the '43 incident - with the help now of present-day technology.
