Publisher Description: A Daring Journey to Freedom - Escape from a Japanese Prisoner-of War Camp is a personal account of Colonel Gangaram Parab's escape together with two other fellow officers from the Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Singapore during World War II. Singapore's ignominious fall to the Japanese forces in February 1942 was considered the worst defeat in British history. The long and arduous journey of the escapees back to India lasting over 5 months was fraught with various dangers and death traps, including occasions when they suffered betrayal, evaded recapture by the Japanese, and faced perils of the dense jungles of Thailand and Burma. The brave young men kept their faith and hope through all the challenges. In February 1943, Captain Parab and the other two escapees were each awarded the Military Cross, the prestigious award for gallantry, by the British Viceroy in Delhi. |
