Publisher Description: During World War I, the Russian Empire began to chase suspicious ethnic minorities, especially Germans and Jews. Members of the hitherto loyal Baltic German elite in the Baltic Sea provinces of the Russian Empire suddenly found themselves attacked by the state which used repressive measures against them. There was a real campaign against them in the media. Russian higher officers were a driving force behind this. Numerous prominent German Balts were even sent to Siberia. This book is based on previously little known documents from Russian archives that shed light on this aspect of the history of the Germans in the Baltic. |
