Annotation: This book describes an innovative instructional model for using visual arts practices to advance writing and literacy learning in the elementary classroom. Developed and refined over more than a decade, the approach makes use of simple hands-on art experiences to support the writing and reading process. The approach emphasizes two particular art techniques: 1) Image-Making in the Writing Process (use of hand-painted collage and textured papers) and 2) Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy through Art (use of crayon resist painting), both of which are taught through an Artists/ Writers Workshop. Making use of illustrated childrens books, the workshop process engages students in studying the key elements of a book (e.g., theme, characters, setting) and then in crafting both a pictorial and written response. With the teacher modeling the process, students learn how to brainstorm ideas, acquire new words and revise their work, ultimately producing handsome pictures as writing that is structured, purposeful, and richly detailed. Having gained access to thought, language, and modes of expression that might otherwise be unavailable, the students discover new strengths and confidence for tackling the reading process. Although quality picture books are initially used in the sessions, the same process can be applied to literary texts or content-based textbooks. The proposed book will include: Theoretical rationale for integrating visual and literacy learning approaches. Detailed description of framework and teaching methodology Strategies for creating art-based literacy lessons in various content areas. DVD explaining the art techniques and modeling the process in the classroom.

Publisher Description:
In The Power of Pictures book and companion DVD, Beth Olshansky introduces teachers to her innovative art-based approach to literacy instruction. Widely practiced in classrooms across the country, the model has been proven by research to improve literacy achievement with a wide range of learners, especially those who struggle with verbal skills. At the heart of her approach is the Artists/Writers Workshop. Through study of quality picture books and hands-on art experiences, students learn to visualize, "paint pictures with words," and ultimately create their own extraordinary artistic and literary work. The book and DVD explain how any teacher can successfully use this process to enable all students, particularly low performers, to make dramatic gains in both reading and writing.
